Experimentally, Hsuan Zhang recited the spell the old woman taught him. Shun Wu Koong immediately clutched his head as if red hot needles were being inserted into his skull. He writhed on the ground in agony.

Hsuan Zhang could not bear to see his disciple in such pain and stopped the magic. Shun Wu Koong suddenly sat up. To be on the safe side, Hsuan Zhang tested the spell again. Shun Wu Koong again dropped to the ground in extreme pain, trying in vain to wrench the cap off until Hsuan Zhang stopped reciting.

Shun Wu Koong asked suspiciously, “Master, what is this cap? It hurts my head, and I can’t seem to take it off.”

“Ah,” said Hsuan Zhang sadly. “I’m sorry, Shun Wu Koong. It’s a magic cap that the old woman gave me. Whenever you disobey me, I need only recite a spell to put you in extreme pain. Fortunately, when you have become truly enlightened, the cap will fall off by itself.”

Shun Wu Koong could see Buddha’s hand in this. He dared not become angry. Instead, he humbly said, “Master, I understand that Buddha in his wisdom does not feel that I am worthy yet to accompany you on the way to India unless I wear this cap. I see now that I was cruel when I slew those bandits. As you know, I still have a lot to learn. I will try to defer to your wisdom in the future, and maybe you will not have to use the cap spell as often as time goes by. Some day, I hope that the cap will fall off by itself when I become truly enlightened.”

Hsuan Zhang was pleased at this change in Shun Wu Koong. He clasped the monkey’s paw warmly, and they immediately became the best of friends again.
